Prerequisites TLA520x, TLA7012, TLA7016, TLA7PC1, TLA715, TLA721, and EXTERNAL PC PRE-REQUISITES -- Minimum requirements: 256 MB RAM, 500 MB free hard drive space, Windows XP Professional SP2 or Windows 2000 Professional SP4, and if using iView: NI 488.2 V2.3. Description This release is a full maintenance release of the TLA Software Application. After installing, the TLA APPLICATION REGISTRY PATCH (WebID 5360) should also be installed. This release also adds iView support for TDS1000B/TDS200B, TDS1001/TDS2004, DPO4000, and DPO7000 series oscilloscopes. For installation and use only on TLA7012/7016, TLA715/721, TLA520x series logic analyzers, and on TLA7PC1 and external PCs. This TLA software cannot be installed on TLA714, TLA720, or TLA600-series instruments. ------------ WARNING WHEN UPGRADING TLA7012 -------------- Do NOT turn on the TLA Server before completing the ENTIRE upgrade procedure, which INCLUDES mainframe firmware upgrades. This media is shipped with new TLA products and with TLA7UP, TLA5KUP, and TLA7KUP option 41. Those who download the TLA service pack from the Tektronix website receive only the TLA application software. Version 5.1 SP1 of the TLA Application software includes the following changes: Support for the new TLA5000B series with PowerFlex options Support for new Tektronix Oscilloscopes (DPO70000, DPO4000, TDS1000B/2000B) These bug fixes and feature changes... TLA7012 upgrades: 1) WARNING: When upgrading a TLA7012 from V5.0, do NOT turn on the TLA Server before upgrading the TekLink firmware, and do NOT upgrade the TekLink firmware from a remote computer. Doing so will corrupt the instrument firmware. Follow the entire upgrade procedure carefully. 2) When upgrading a TLA7012 from V5.1, you may see an error "Failed to register TlnkMonSvc" during removal of the old software. Ignore this error and click OK. The upgrade will proceed normally. Software/Firmware compatibility: Use the Firmware Loader to make sure you have the latest firmware available. The main TLA application does not notify you if the TLA7012 firmware is out of date. Note the recommended software and firmware versions in the table below. Also, cycle the power on a TLA7016 after loading of mainframe or module firmware. 3) SOFTWARE VERSION TABLE The following table shows the individual components of the TLA Application Software and their own individual version numbers. Tektronix logic analyzers are shipped with this software already installed, but if you wish to update an earlier version of the TLA Application Software, or to control your logic analyzer remotely from a PC over a network connection, you must explicitly install this software onto the PC. To install this software, refer to the detailed installation instructions that accompany the software. >>>>> BE SURE TO ALSO UPGRADE TLA7000 MAINFRAME FIRMWARE. <<<<< The major changes from Version 4.4 to 5.1 are: HARDWARE 1) TLA7012 Portable Mainframe. The TLA7012 supports up to 2 TLA modules, features a 15-inch (381 mm) display and provides a new front-panel with 5 knobs for scrolling data and short-cut keys for instant access to commonly used menus. 2) TLA7016 Benchtop Mainframe. The TLA7016 supports up to 6 TLA modules. It requires a network connection to a PC running V5.1 software. 3) TL708EX TekLink(TM) Hub. The TL708EX allows up to 8 TLA7012 and TLA7016 mainframes to operate together as a single TLA instrument, running under the control of the TLA Application Software. 4) TLA7PC1 PC Controller. The TLA7PC1 comes preloaded with the V5.1 of the TLA Application Software, and it supports Gigabit Ethernet communication with TLA7012 and TLA7016 mainframes. SOFTWARE 1) TekLink(TM) Connectivity. V5.1 software supports high-speed TekLink(TM) connections between TLA7012 and TLA7016 mainframes that allow them to operate together as a single instrument. 2) Network operation of TLA Hardware. A PC running V5.1 TLA software can connect to and operate a TLA Series Logic Analyzer running V5.1 software. This capability allows engineers to perform real time analysis from their own PC which usually contains proprietary design tools and desktop solutions. It also allows customers to upgrade PC controllers and workstations without replacing their TLA mainframes and modules. 3) UI Enhancements. Version 5.1 of the TLA Application Software provides a number of new capabilities for TLA logic analyzers have been running V4.4 and earlier versions of the TLA Application Software. These enhancements include: * Documentation Browser - A new documentation browser provides easy access to Tektronix Customer Documentation PDF files. The browser is available on the instrument and on the TLA Documentation CD that is shipped with your instrument or software upgrade kit. The browser includes a search capability that allows you to search for key words in each of the documents. The browser includes all files that were current at product release. Refer to the Tektronix Web Site for the most current documentation (www.tektronix.com). * LA Data Measurements - LA Data Measurements provides the ability to perform sophisticated measurements on logic analyzer acquisition data. This is similar to the measurement capabilities offered today for oscilloscope data. With LA Data Measurements the user is able to measure things such as frequency, period, pulse width, duty cycle, and edge count. The user can specify the gating over which the measurement is performed. There are three types of gating available; Display (default), Cursors (between cursor1 and cursor2), and Full Record (all of memory). There are also statistics on each measurement, such as min, max, average and standard deviation of the measurements accumulated over the sample range. * Drag & Drop Trigger for Waveform Window - A new trigger definition mechanism utilizing a new drag-and-drop interface to apply triggers to actual user data. There are seven types of triggers to choose from. The user sets up a trigger simply by dragging one of the seven different types of triggers onto their data and dropping it. The trigger is loaded based on the drop point in the data window. The user can change the settings for the trigger if required. Setting up a trigger is now as easy as "Drag-Drop-and-Run". * TLA Explorer - The new TLA Explorer tabbed window, located on the left side of the TLA UI, is designed to be used as an overall resource view and navigation aid. Users can see which windows are associated with which resources, and can easily select a window and navigate to it. * Navigation Short Cuts - Direct navigation buttons on the TLA7012 Portable front panel navigate the user directly to a waveform, listing, setup, or trigger window. These buttons are duplicated in the UI on a navigation toolbar. When there are multiples of any type of window in the UI, then the button in the toolbar becomes a drop down and users may select the specific window they would like to navigate to. * MagniVu Display Mode - Pressing the MagniVu button on the front panel of the TLA7012 Portable or in the waveform window toolbar adds the MagniVu traces to the waveform display for all traces that are in the waveform display. Pressing the button a second time removes the MagniVu traces from the display. If the MagniVu data is not immediately viewable on screen, a new icon appears in the waveform trace area on the left or right side of the display that indicates the direction of the MagniVu data. Simply pressing this icon will center the display on the MagniVu data. * iView(TM) Display Mode - Pressing the iView(TM) button on the front panel of the TLA7012 Portable or in the waveform window toolbar either starts the iView(TM) wizard if no iView(TM) oscilloscope is in the system, or adds the iView(TM) traces to the waveform display for all oscilloscope channels that are in the system. Pressing the button a second time removes the iView(TM) traces from the display. If the iView(TM) data is not immediately viewable on screen, a new icon appears in the waveform trace area on the left or right side of the display that indicates the direction of the iView(TM) data. Simply pressing this icon will center the display on the iView(TM) data. * Cursor/Mark Buttons - C1, C2, and Mark buttons on the front panel of the TLA7012 Portable select the active mark and will assign the general purpose knob to the cursor or mark. Pressing and holding the Mark button will bring up the GoTo dialog and allow the user to select a mark from the list to assign to the GP knob. * Touchscreen Support - New touchscreen option for the TLA7012 Portable. There is also a new virtual keyboard that will come up when the toolbar keyboard icon is pressed. This is used to enter data into a field in the UI. * Updated Look & Feel - A new look and feel will be introduced to the TLA UI. This noticeable new look will help with bringing together the branding of Tektronix oscilloscopes and LA's. UI look and feel items will change to be more consistent with a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-style, like the introduction of more rounded corners and less hard edges. * More Cursor/Mark Measurements - The new delta time measurement toolbar allows users to add as many arbitrary mark delta time measurements as they like. Measure the time between any two marks, including cursor1, cursor2, trigger, beginning/end of data, and user marks. Any number of delta time toolbar measurements can be added. * Show Values at Active Cursor - The new "Value" button in the waveform and listing window toolbar adds a column to the right of the waveform labels displaying the value of each channel and bus at the active cursor. This is a toggle on/off column and works with both Cursor 1 and Cursor 2. * Activity Monitor in Data Windows - The new "Activity" button on the front panel of the TLA7012 portable mainframe and in the data window toolbar adds a column to the right of the waveform header in waveform display (below the header in listing display) that shows the probe activity for each channel. If another type of window is active (other than waveform or listing) pressing this button launches the probe activity dialog window. * Snap to Next Edge for Cursors and Marks - Cursor hairlines can be grabbed and dragged. Grabbing a hairline and moving it in a left/right direction displays a visual indicator showing where the cursor will land when you release the hairline. This is a snap to edge style of movement. The landing place is determined by the waveform you are on when you release the hairline. * Busform Expand & Collapse Improvements - A plus/minus tree mechanism for expanding and collapsing a group in waveform and listing displays with one touch. * Highlight Rows When Selected - When a waveform header is selected, the entire row in the waveform window is highlighted making viewing of the waveform easier. In listing window an entire column is highlighted. This helps analyze data in visually busy displays. * Timescale at Top of Window - A new timescale bar at the top of the waveform window that shows time relative to the trigger point. A red line in the timescale bar follows the location of the mouse pointer to aid in doing quick visual measurements. * Toolbar Reconstruction - The TLA application toolbars are regrouped into smaller, more like-functioned toolbars that can be realigned, turned on/off, or repositioned within the application adding to the flexibility of the UI. * Mark Names Visible in the UI - All mark names are spelled out completely in the UI so that users no longer need to open the property page to identify a mark. A new field to name each Mark is added to the property page of each mark. When the mouse is hovered over a mark label, the mark name and the associated comment are shown in a tool tip. * Full Screen Mode - New full screen mode selection in the View menu removes unneeded toolbars from the display and enables viewing of more data. * Single Channel Group Shown as Timing Waveform by Default - Single channel groups are displayed as timing waveforms in waveform display by default. Users can choose to show as a group display if they like. * Graticule is Disabled by Default - The graticule is turned off by default. The addition of the timescale at the top of the waveform display provides the needed timescale and allows for a visually clean display. Users can choose to override this selection in the user preferences and show the graticule by default. * Display Individual Channels in Listing Window - Individual channels can be displayed in listing window. Single channel groups no longer need to be created for display in listing window. * Context Menu to Change Radix in Listing Window - Direct manipulation of the radix in the listing window through the context menu. Access to the radix change context menu is by right clicking on the column label. * Timestamp Resolution Settings - Timestamp resolution settings can be changed by the user to make better use of visual space in the listing display. For those times when ultimate resolution is not required, the timestamp column can be narrowed by decreasing the resolution, thereby freeing up more space in the display for other data columns. * iView(TM) - Overlap TDS Data with TLA Trigger - Automatic adjustment of the TDS acquisition settings such that the data acquired on the TDS will overlap the trigger point data on the TLA when the TLA is triggering the TDS. This can be turned off as a user preference. * iView(TM) - Smarter iView(TM) Wizard - Automates as much as possible in the setup of an iView(TM) acquisition if the oscilloscope is already physically connected to the TLA. This will allow users to skip most steps in the wizard if they desire. * Default to 128K Record Length - The default record length is set to 128K so that the UI remains responsive. * Force Main Pre-fill by Default - The force main pre-fill selection in trigger is checked by default. This will force the memory to be filled to the trigger position setting prior to looking for a trigger condition. Customers who want to trigger immediately can set the trigger position to 0% or uncheck the selection. * Trigger Global Settings are Global - Settings at the top of the trigger window like force main pre-fill, trigger position, MagniVu storage rate, and MagniVu position are now global and will not reset to default settings unless the user chooses to load a default trigger. They will stay globally set if a new trigger program or new EasyTrigger is selected. * Installation Improvements - Starting with V5.0 the TLA, Patgen, TPI Client and PPI Client software is included in one installation. New TLA systems are distributed with a TLA Hard Disk Image CD set, which is able to restore Windows XP Professional and Tektronix-supplied software to the same level as shipped from the factory. To learn more about this CD set, refer to the TLA software installation procedure. After installation on TLA mainframes, the TLA Application may tell you that a firmware upgrade is required. Firmware files are copied to your TLA during installation. To upgrade firmware, click on Start > Tektronix Logic Analyzer > TLA Firmware Loader. (See the installation notes for details.) 2) SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY (Refer to the version table in the Service Pack section above.) 3) IMPACT ON OTHER TEKTRONIX LOGIC ANALYZER FAMILY PRODUCTS You may want to refer to the release notes for other closely related TLA products. Pattern Generator Application Software Online: TLA > Start > Programs > Tektronix Pattern Generator > Pattern Generator Release Notes PPI Client Software Online: PC > Start > Programs > Tektronix Pattern Generator > PPI Release Notes PatGenVu Replaced with PatGen application running in Offline mode. 4) PRODUCTS AFFECTED TLA Mainframe Hardware Version 5.1 software is compatible only with TLA7012, TLA7016, TLA7PC1, TLA715, TLA721, and TLA5200-series mainframes. The following minimum system specifications are recommended: RAM: 256 MB minimum, 512MB recommended Hard Drive: 10GB minimum, with 500MB free space Module Firmware Refer to the table above to determine which LA and DSO modules will need firmware upgrades for Version 5.1. The module firmware is placed on your TLA or PC hard drive as part of the TLA Application Software. If a module is installed that is not running V5.1-compatible firmware, the TLA Application Software displays a warning message at startup that identifies the required module firmware version. The module will not show up in the TLA Application System window. You can further verify this by going to the "Modules" page of the TLA Application's System property sheet (Menubar > System > System Properties > Modules). This page identifies modules installed in the system that have incompatible (old) firmware. Save File Compatibility All TLA save files are forward-compatible; saved files from all previous versions of TLA Application software will load properly on V5.1 systems. V5.1 save files, however, are not backward compatible and will not load onto systems running pre-V5.1 software. Tektronix recommends that you upgrade all TLA mainframes and modules that will be used together with V5.1 TLA Application Software. Also, TLA7000-series save files are compatible with TLA700- and TLA5200-series systems, within certain hardware configuration constraints. The same is true regarding save file compatibility with the TLA application running in Offline mode. TMS Microprocessor and Bus Support All TMS microprocessor and bus support packages introduced after the release of the TLA V5.1 software require V5.1 TLA Application Software on your mainframe, since the support package will contain only V5.1 compatible setup files. If you have an earlier version of TLA Application Software installed on your mainframe and attempt to load new TMS XXX support introduced after V5.1, you will receive an error message. All TMS XXX supports introduced prior to V5.1 will have setup files on the factory disks that are forward-compatible with V5.1. TPI Client Software Compatibility If you use COM-based TPI (TLA Programmatic Interface) on a remote PC, you must install this version of the TLA Application Software which includes the TPI client on that PC. Failing to do so may result compatibility problems. See the TPI Help for more information. If you are running TLA V5.1 on a PC or TLA mainframe that is running Windows XP Professional, see the Operational Notes below for information on how to configure your system to support COM-based TPI. TLAVu(TM) Compatibility The TLA Application, running in Offline mode, replaces all versions of TLAVu(TM). No version of TLAVu(TM) can display files created on a TLA system running V5.0 or greater. TLA V5.1 Software will operate on PCs running Windows 2000 or XP. The TLA application supports all the features TLAVu(TM) provided for viewing and analyzing data. Some software packages must be installed separately, such as the microprocessor and bus support packages. For information about these packages, refer to their associated documentation or contact your local Tektronix representative. 7) UPGRADE NOTES Version 5.1 can be used to upgrade TLA7012, TLA715, TLA721, and TLA5200-series mainframes. You cannot use 5.1 to upgrade TLA714, TLA720, TLA600-series or earlier TLA mainframes. Version 5.1 can be installed on a standalone PC that is running Windows XP or Windows 2000 (for use in the Offline mode or as a remote host). You may also re-install Version 5.1 of the TLA Application Software on a TLA7000- or TLA5200-series logic analyzer that was shipped from the factory with Version 5.1 on Windows XP Professional already installed. 8) OPERATIONAL NOTES The following notes describe functions associated with this version of software that can affect how you use your Tektronix Logic Analyzer. The listed functions are high impact or frequently seen problems. Anti-virus software ------------------- This product is not equipped with virus protection software. If this instrument is going to be placed on a network, it is highly recommended that you add such software. Prior to leaving Tektronix, this product was checked for known viruses and to the best of Tektronix' knowledge, was considered clean of known security threats. Upgrading TekLink(TM) firmware on a TLA7012 mainframe ----------------------------------------------------- On a TLA7012 mainframe running V5.0 and TekLink(TM) firmware V5.0.074, you must run the firmware loader locally to update the TekLink(TM) firmware for V5.1. When connecting to a TLA7012 from a remote PC, the firmware loader fails to display "Teklink" in the choice dialog box, making it impossible to upgrade the TLA7012 remotely. Clocking modes and EasyTrigger ------------------------------ A change in clocking mode including activation of any advanced clocking mode dialog, may cause an EasyTrigger setup to reset to default values. Where possible, configure the clocking mode and any advanced clocking settings desired before you select and modify your EasyTrigger setup.. Power configuration & settings ------------------------------ Tektronix recommends that you not modify the power-related settings in either the BIOS or the Power Management area of Windows XP Professional. They are set at the factory to a configuration that is optimal for the logic analyzer. Windows XP user accounts ------------------------ If you add new user accounts on the TLA using the Windows XP User Accounts applet in the Control Panel, the new user may be set up as either a "Standard User (Power Users Group)" or a "Restricted User (Users Group)". This is configured in the Group Membership tab of the User Properties dialog box. The TLA will not operate correctly for a "Restricted User" unless the Users group is given Full Control permission for the "C:\Program Files\TLA 700\System" directory. This is because there are several dynamic files created in the System directory when the instrument boots. External flat panel displays ---------------------------- If you are using an external flat panel display with your TLA (Option 3M or 4M), for best operation Tektronix recommends running the monitor's AutoSet procedure which adjusts the monitor settings to be most compatible with the video signal. Refer to the documentation that comes with the monitor for details. Configuration of Windows XP Professional for COM-based TPI support ------------------------------------------------------------------ In addition to the standard steps required to for setting a Windows 2000 platform for COM, you must also perform the following steps to enable COM-based TPI on a TLA mainframe running Windows XP Professional. Please note that these steps may pose a security risk. You may wish to consult your network adminstrator to assess the risk for your circumstances. 1. Go to START->RUN and type "gpedit.msc". In the Group Policy go to COMPUTER CONFIGURATION->WINDOWS SETTINGS->SECURITY SETTINGS->LOCAL POLICIES- >SECURITY OPTIONS. Set the option "Accounts: Guest account status" to "Enabled". 2. Set the option "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only" to "Disabled". 3. Now scroll further down and set the "Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation" to "Enabled" if permitted, if not please disregard. 4. Reboot the computer and log back in as administrator. 5. Set "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" to "Enabled". 6. Under to the "USER RIGHTS ASSIGNMENT", add to the "Access this computer from the network" the "Guest" user. 7. Make sure that the "Guest" user is removed from the "Deny access to this computer from the network" and "Deny logon locally" lists. 8. Go back to dcomcnfg and expand Component Services and then expand Computers. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. 9. Under the Default Properties tab, check Enabel COM Internet Services on this computer, change Default Authentication Level to Default, and change Default Impersonation Level to Anonymous. 10. Under the COM Security tab, go into all four buttons and add the user "Everyone" with all access allowed. 9) Known Issues The following list contains information on instrument functions associated with this software release. Version 5.1 has the following known issues and workarounds. Unless noted otherwise, these issues apply to all models in the Tektronix Logic Analyzer Family. Multiple users -------------- Although Windows XP Professional allows multiple users to login simultaneously, only one TLA application at a time can access a TLA mainframe's hardware. To enforce this restriction, only one user at a time can log into a TLA mainframe. This restriction only applies to TLA mainframes, not to a PC controller connected to a TLA mainframe. To enforce this restriction, TLA mainframes shipped from the factory with Windows XP Professional installed have the "Use Fast User Switching" option disabled in Control Panel > User Accounts > Select login and logoff options. TPI.NET ISearchableWindow interface ----------------------------------- The TPI.NET programmer's reference is incorrect with respect to the ISearchableWindow.StartSearch() method and the ISearchableWindow.SearchCompleted event. ISearchableWindow.StartSearch() does not return immediately as documented. Instead, it returns only after the search completes. The ISearchableWindow.SearchCompleted event currently never fires. Workaround: Once ISearchableWindow.StartSearch() returns, use ILockingWindow.ActiveCursor and ILockingWindow.GetTimestamp() to derive the information that ISearchableWindow.SearchCompleted is supposed to provide. TPI.NET ILATriggerAction interface The TPI.NET programmer's reference is missing a definition for the Arm event for the ILATriggerAction.Definition property. The BNF for ILATriggerAction.Definition requires the following updates: <Definition> :: <TriggerAction> | <CounterAction> | <TimerAction> | <SignalAction> | <GoToAction> | <StoreAction> | <SnapshotAction> | <ArmAction> | DoNothing <ArmAction> ::= Arm <ModuleName> <ModuleName> ::= "<AlphaNumericString>" NOTE: White space other than a space character, and the single backquote (') are invalid. PowerFlex(TM) and TLA7XM frames ------------------------------- The PowerFlex(TM) utility no longer recognizes instrument modules installed in TLA7XM frames. In multi-frame TLA systems that contain TLA7XM frames, you can only upgrade TLA instrument modules that are installed in the TLA721 mainframe. NOTE: The PowerFlex(TM) utility does recognize all TLA instrument modules installed in multi-frame TLA systems connected via TekLink(TM). TLA application and TekVISA(TM) resource manager CallMonitor conflict --------------------------------------------------------------------- Running the TekVISA(TM) resource manager's CallMonitor while the TLA application is open can cause the TLA application to crash. Workaround: Do not run the CallMonitor while the TLA application is active. VXI-11 addressing ----------------- Although VXI supports addresses from 1 to 254, VXI-11 does not support static addresses above 95. This has no impact when running the TLA Application Software locally on a TLA mainframe. However, any time the the TLA Application Software runs on a TLA mainframe remotely, the Application will not see modules that have VXI static Logical Addresses from 96 to 254. The modules will not appear in the system. Workaround: Always configure LA Modules to use dynamic Addresses. This can be done by setting the address switches to FF. TDS7000 with iVerify(TM) ------------------------ When iVerify(TM) is used with TDS7000 series Oscilloscopes using firmware older than V2.0, the horizontal time/div may not get set correctly the first time an analysis is initiated. This only occurs on the first iVerify(TM) analysis that occurs after the scope was used in one or more iView(TM) data acquisitions. It is recommended that you use firmware version V2.3 or newer with iVerify(TM). However you can continue using iVerify(TM) with older versions of TDS firmware, but will need to initiate a second data Analysis when this problem is encountered. TDS7000 with iView ------------------ When using the TLA iView(TM) feature to do coordinated acquisitions with a TDS7000, the TLA uses the TDS7000 Aux In connector to trigger the oscilloscope. If you are using a TDS7054 or TDS7104 with the TLA and the oscilloscope doesn't properly trigger, calibrate Aux In with the following procedure: 1. Make sure the TDS7000 firmware version is 1.2.0 or higher (Menubar > Help > About TDS7000...). If the firmware version is not 1.2.0 or higher, you must first upgrade the TDS firmware (download from www.tektronix.com). 2. Delete all files in the C:\vxBoot\CalCons directory. To do this minimize the TDS application (Menubar > File > Minimize), then use Windows Explorer the delete the files. 3. Reboot the TDS7000 (cycle the power). 4. Re-calibrate the TDS7000 (also known as Signal Path Compensation). To do this, choose Instrument Calibration from the Utilities menu of the menubar, then follow the instructions displayed on the screen. iView(TM) adjustments to scope settings --------------------------------------- At times, an oscilloscope's settings may be incompatible with the operation of the TLA iView(TM) feature. In those cases, the TLA application modifies the oscilloscope's settings so that iView(TM) will continue to function. Among the changes that can occur are the following: * The iView(TM) feature does not support ET sampling mode on the oscilloscope. To disable ET mode, iView(TM) first sets the scope to single sample, horizontal roll off, and FastFrame 0. If the oscilloscope still remains in ET mode, iView(TM) then explicitly places the oscilloscope in IT sampling mode. * The maximimum horizontal resolution iView(TM) supports is 1ps. If an oscilloscope is set to a sampling rate with more resolution than 1ps or that produces a resolution not divisible by 1ps, iView(TM) attempts to avoid rounding error by resetting the horizontal sampling rate to a resolution of 25ps. In some cases, the oscilloscope's other settings prevent it from achieving a resolution of precisely 25ps; in those cases, the oscilloscope sampling resolution will be set to a value as close to 25ps as possible (determined by the oscilloscope), and rounding errors may affect the accuracy of the iView(TM) display. TDS1000/2000 with iView ----------------------- If you take an acquisition after changing the horizontal scale setting on TDS1000/2000 Series oscilloscopes, the TLA and scope waveform edges may no longer be aligned. You can re-align them in the waveform display that contains the TDS1000/2000 data (Menubar > Data > Time Alignment). Make sure your external oscilloscope is the Data Source, then adjust the time offset to align the waveforms. The following table lists the approximate offsets for various horizontal scale settings. Horiz. Scale Time Offset 50 ns -217 ns 100 ns -5 ns 250 ns -11 ns 500 ns -18 ns 1 us -12 ns 2.5us -50 ns 5 us -120 ns 10 us -250 ns 25 us -650 ns 50 us -1300 ns 100 us -2600 ns 250 us +500 ns iView(TM) cable with unused scope --------------------------------- When you are not actively using the iView(TM) feature of the TLA, it is recommended that you unplug the System Trig In connector of the iView(TM) cable from your logic analyzer. This will help avoid problems with inadvertent triggers generated by activity on the oscilloscope. It is also recommended that the System Trig In of the iView(TM) cable not be connected when the oscilloscope is turned off and the logic analyzer is in use. TLA520x and Standby mode ------------------------ Placing the TLA520x in Standby mode by selecting Standby from either the (Start > Shutdown) menu or the keyboard supplied with the TLA520x causes the system to remain in Standby mode indefinitely. You must cycle power on the system to bring it back. This will cause loss of any unsaved data or settings. This problem does not occur on TLA700 or TLA7000 series systems. Time alignment data sources don't appear in the pull-down menu -------------------------------------------------------------- This is caused by a bug in the original V4.3.225 release in which some bad information is saved during a Save System operation. This bug could manifest itself in areas other than time alignment. Therefore, even when using V5.x, if you do a Load System from a V4.3.225 saved system file, the original problem may re-appear because the previously-saved bad information was re-loaded. To completely cure the problem, users should re-create data windows from scratch in V5.x, and then do a Save System operation. Probe names for clocks and qualifiers are now appended with empty parenthesis () -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This change has not yet been reflected in the TPI documentation, and may impact developers of TPI.NET client programs. DSO input termination impedance and attenuation with analog multiplexer ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue applies only to TLA7Axx logic analyzer modules. When the Analog Output of a TLA7Axx module is connected to an oscilloscope using an iView(TM) Analog Output BNC-to-BNC Cable, the attenuation of the oscilloscope channel is automatically set to 10X. However, the termination impedance of the oscilloscope channel is not automatically set. In order to see a proper representation of the analog signal on the oscilloscope, the input termination impedance must be manually set to 50 ohms. If a standard BNC-to-BNC cable is used to connect the logic analyzer analog output to an oscilloscope, then both the 50-ohm termination and 10X attenuation must be set manually on the oscilloscope. Loading AutoDeskew setups ------------------------- There are several known problems with restoring information into AutoDeskew with a Load System or a Load AutoDeskew Setup operation. After such an operation, be sure to inspect the results in the AutoDeskew Properties dialog box. Detecting transitions in an LA trigger program ---------------------------------------------- The LA modules can be programmed to recognize the transition of an individual channel or a group of channels. For example, "If Channel ABC Goes High then Trigger", or "If Group XYZ Changes then Trigger". Internally, this is done using a transition recognizer which compares values at consecutive sample points. You would expect the output of the transition recognizer to be "false" for the first sample in an acquisition (because there is not a previous sample to compare with). However, for TLA7Lx/Mx/Nx/Px/Qx modules the transition recognizer output is sometimes "true" for the first sample. This means that if your trigger program is "If Channel ABC Goes High then Trigger" you may get a trigger on the first sample even though you would probably not expect it. Workaround: The workaround is to use a state in the trigger program to skip over the first sample, the sample for which the transition recognizer output is unreliable. The modified trigger program would look something like this: State 1: If Anything then Go To State 2 State 2: If Channel ABC Goes High then Trigger For TLA7Axx modules and TLA520x logic analyzers, there is never a transition detected on the first sample in an acquisition - the transition recognizer output is always "false". For trigger programs that test for a channel that "Goes High" or "Goes Low" or test for a transition recognizer that "Occurs" the extra first state in the trigger program is not necessary because the logic analyzer will never trigger on the first sample. However, a trigger program that tests for a channel which "Doesn't go High" or "Doesn't go Low" or tests for a transition recognizer that "Doesn't occur" still needs to use an extra state. For example: State 1: If Anything then Go To State 2 State 2: If Channel ABC Doesn't go High then Trigger Counter/timer readouts in the status monitor -------------------------------------------- This issue applies only to the TLA7Lx/Mx/Nx/Px/Qx modules. Under certain conditions, when a counter/timer is used as a logic analyzer module trigger event, the readout value displayed in the Status Monitor or the About Data tab of a data window property sheet is incorrect even though the logic analyzer triggered correctly. The problem occurs under the following conditions: The target value of the counter is less than 8 (or the target value of the timer is less than 32 ns); the counter/timer is incremented past the target value; and the counter is reset (or the timer is cleared). Workaround: If you need to see the above counter/timer values in the Status Monitor or About Data tab, or if you need to use the target values in the Histogram window or with a TPI application, use a second counter/timer in parallel with the first counter/timer, but do not use it in a trigger event. The readout value of the second counter/timer will be correct. Windows 2000 crash ------------------ The Windows 2000 operating system can crash in a very specific (and unusual) set of circumstances. Windows 2000 will crash if you have an external oscilloscope attached to the TLA via the iView(TM) External Oscilloscope Cable, the TLA is in the process of acquiring data (running), you disconnect the USB end of the iView(TM) External Oscilloscope Cable, you then stop the acquisition and exit the TLA application. Workaround: Do not disconnect the USB end of the iView(TM) External Oscilloscope Cable while the TLA is performing an acquisition. TLA Programmatic Interface (COM-based) -------------------------------------- The TLA Application Software can be driven by either a local user interacting with the graphic user interface (GUI) or by a TPI (TLA Programmatic Interface) client program. In some circumstances, these two uses can conflict with each other. It is the user's responsibility to see that these conflicts do not occur. Generally, there will be no problem. One situation that can cause a problem is if a modal dialog box is open in the GUI at the time that a TPI client program issues a command or sets the value of a property. In order to avoid changing the state of the TLA application while the modal dialog box is open, any TPI command or property setting that would do so, is prohibited. Attempting to issue such a command or set a property value through TPI will return an error value of TLA700_E_MODAL_DIALOG_OPEN to the client program. For a complete list of commands that are disallowed while a modal dialog box is open, see the Version History for TPI version 4.1 in the TPI on-line help. Workaround: Ensure that the TLA application does not have a modal dialog box open when the TPI client program has control of the logic analyzer. TLA Performance Verification (PV) software Compatibility with TLA7000 and V5.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In order to control a TLACAL test fixture from a TLA7012 or PCs without a standard RS232 port, you need a USB to RS232 adapter. The Belkin F5U109 has been used successfully by Tektronix, and is Tek Part Number 119-6837-00. The TLA Performance Verification software for TLA7Lx/Mx/Nx/Px/Qx and TLA7Dx/Ex modules has not been updated to run on a remote PC controller. If you need to verify one of those modules, you must do so in a TLA7012 or TLA700-series mainframe. Also, the PV software will display a PCI-VXI bridge error when running with TLA Application Software version 5.x, unless you first delete the Visa32.dll file from the C:\Tekcats folder.
