Description

PC based installation utility for upgrading a Y350C NetTek platform to SW version 1.120 (Spanish localized version). This utility runs resident on a desktop PC updating the Y350C NetTek platform connected to the desktop PC via an RS232 serial connection. See the release notes for additional details. This release should NOT be installed if the Y350C is used with an OTDR module. In such case, please use SW Version 1.118

NetTek Software Version 1.120 Release Notes for the Web - 12/27/04

1. DESCRIPTION

The product described in this document is the 1.120 release of the NetTek SW. There are separate installation utilities for each of the nine language dependent OS images. Language versions supported are as follows:

Spanish - y350cnettek_v1-120_esp.exe
French - y350cnettek_v1-120_fra.exe
German - y350cnettek_v1-120_ger.exe
Italian - y350cnettek_v1-120_ita.exe
Brazilian Portuguese - y350cnettek_v1-120_ptb.exe
Simplified Chinese - y350cnettek_v1-120_chs.exe
Japanese - y350cnettek_v1-120_jpn.exe
Korean - y350cnettek_v1-120_kor.exe

Major changes for this release are as follows:

- The platform SW upgrade utility now prompts the user for the Y350C serial number. The utility uses the serial number to determine which FW to use when upgrading the attached the Y350C. WARNING: Failure to enter the correct Y350C NetTek serial number could result in a system upgrade failure thereby rendering the Y350C NetTek platform inoperable.

- YBA250 and YBT250 SW applications can now be stored on an installed PCMCIA flash memory card when there is inadequate remaining space in internal flash memory.

- The YBT1 application can now be registered with the platform SW. This results in YBT1 application specific information being available in the System Configuration utility as well as the ability to uninstall the application.

- Simply displaying the Shutdown dialog no longer causes problems with PCMCIA cards.

- The platform SW option key is now reported by the System Configuration utility.

2. COMPATIBILITY

This release is compatible with all existing versions of the NetTek platform. Users of any previous version of the NetTek SW can update to this new revision.

Miscellaneous compatibility notes...

- Starting with version 1.117, the NetTek Platform Upgrade Utility contains two versions of the NetTek operating system. When upgrading a NetTek platform with more than 32M of SDRAM, an SDRAM resident OS will be installed. When upgrading a NetTek platform with 32M (or less) of SDRAM, a flash resident OS will be installed.

- Given that the NetTek platform upgrade utility is now using the latest version of InstallShield, the Microsoft Installer utility is now used during the upgrade process. If the user has never installed a utility that uses the Microsoft Installer, the NetTek platform upgrade utility will install the necessary components. This may result in the user being prompted to re-boot their desktop PC during the NetTek upgrade process. If so, the upgrade process will resume from where it left off after the workstation has re-booted.

- The physical location where the OS is stored in flash memory has changed since the NetTek SW 1.103 release. This results in a one-time power-on OS checksum error during the NetTek platform upgrade process when updating from this older version. A "three beep" error code will be issued after the re-boot following the installation of the new boot code. The reason for this is that the new boot code is attempting to checksum the OS image in its new physical location. This new image is not present until after the upgrade process has fully completed. Therefore, this error should be ignored during the upgrade process. No power-on errors should be reported following the completion of the upgrade process.

3. DETAILED OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

a) Power on the NetTek Analyzer using external power. Do not attempt to perform a NetTek operating system upgrade while running on battery power.
b) Backup any NetTek Analyzer resident measurement results, critical data, etc., to floppy, PCMCIA storage card, or desktop PC.
c) The operating system upgrade requires a serial connection between the desktop PC and the NetTek Analyzer to be upgraded. If you have Microsoft's Active Sync or Windows CE Services software installed on the desktop PC it will need to be disabled (click here for details).
d) Connect a serial cable (provided with the NetTek platform) between the desktop PC and the NetTek Analyzer.
e) From the list provided in the Operating System Installation section, double-click on the operating system to be installed.
f) Carefully follow all on-screen instructions. Installations can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
g) Once the installation has completed, the NetTek Analyzer will re-boot. During this first power up cycle after operating system installation, the user will be prompted to perform a touch screen calibration and to enter the platform serial number. Note that the platform serial number can be located on the rear panel (behind the battery compartment) of the NetTek platform.
h) Restore the backups from step b.
i) If the NetTek Analyzer previously had any installed SW packages (such as the YBT1 or YOPM products), they will need to be re-installed.
j) Press the NetTek Analyzer front panel power switch to suspend operations and save the touch screen calibration, platform serial number, and re-installed SW packages to nonvolatile memory.

4. SERIAL CONNECTION CONSIDERATIONS

The upgrade process requires a serial connection between the NetTek Analyzer platform and the desktop PC. Note that if the desktop PC's serial interface has already been configured to use Windows CE Services or Active Sync, you must disable its serial connection.

Disable Windows CE Services as follows:

Right-click on the CE Services icon on the desktop PC system tray; then select Communications.
In the Windows CE Services Properties dialog box, open the Communications tab.
In the Device Connections via Serial Port field, deselect Enabled. (Enable mobile device connection must already be selected to make this selection).
Select OK and close the dialog box.
Disable Active Sync as follows:
Right-click on the Active Sync icon on the desktop PC system tray; then select Connection Settings.
In the Connection Settings dialog box, deselect the Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port checkbox.
Select OK to close the dialog box.
Note that once the upgrade process has been completed the Windows CE Services or Active Sync serial connection should be re-enabled.

5. COMPATIBILITY

This release is compatible with all currently existing versions of the NetTek Analyzer platform.
Users of any previous version of the NetTek Analyzer SW can update to this version.
The NetTek Platform Upgrade Utility uses the Microsoft Installer utility during the upgrade process. If the user has never installed a utility that uses the Microsoft Installer, the NetTek Platform Upgrade Utility will install the necessary components. This may result in the user being prompted to re-boot their desktop PC during the NetTek Analyzer upgrade process. If so, the upgrade process will resume from where it left off after the desktop PC has re-booted.

System Requirements

The NetTek Analyzer operating system upgrade process has been verified to run on the following desktop PC platforms:

- Windows 98
- Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6)
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP

Other desktop PC platform configurations may work but have not been tested.

Additional Requirements:

- Available serial port connection (should support up to 115k baud)
- 100 MB free disk space (temporary usage only)
- Pentium Processor or better
- 16 MB of RAM
- VGA or higher-resolution monitor
- Pointing device (i.e., mouse)
